• Carry-on only. Never checked baggage. E-cigarettes and spare lithium batteries have to travel in the cabin with you. This is a lithium-battery safety rule, not an airline preference, and a device found in checked luggage can hold up your bag.
• Do not use it or charge it on board. Vaping is not permitted on any flight, and charging a device in the cabin is not allowed either.
• Part-fill or empty the tank before you fly. Cabin pressure drops in the air, the sealed air in your pod expands, and a full pod pushes liquid out. Half-full travels much better than full.
• Pack it upright in a sealed bag. Upright, in a ziplock, with the airflow not pressed against anything. If it does weep, the bag contains it.
• Check the destination before you pack. Vaping is restricted or outright banned in a number of countries, and penalties in a few of them are serious. For a trip, a sealed disposable is often the easier option than carrying a refillable plus bottles. Nothing to leak, nothing to fill, and you are not travelling with liquid in your hand luggage allowance.

Highveld altitude and your pods

The East Rand sits at around 1,600 metres. Your pods are filled and sealed at sea level in Cape Town and then come up here, and the pressure difference is enough to notice when you open one.

• Open new pods upright and slowly, over a tissue. The air sealed inside has expanded on the way up. Let it equalise before fitting.
• Do not fill to the brim. Headroom gives the expanding air somewhere to go, which matters more at this altitude than at the coast.
• A wet first draw is normal, not a fault. If it gurgles, that is liquid in the airway. Clearing it takes a minute.
