How Long Should a Vape Coil Last?

It's one of the most common questions we get at Krem, and the honest answer is: it depends. A coil can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on how you vape, what you vape, and the coil itself. Let's break down what actually affects coil life and how to recognise when yours needs replacing.

The Short Answer

For most vapers, a coil lasts 1 to 3 weeks. Light vapers using lighter e-liquids might get a month. Heavy vapers using sweet, dark e-liquids might get less than a week. There's no fixed number — your habits determine the lifespan.

What Affects Coil Lifespan

1. How Often You Vape

This is the obvious one. The more you vape, the faster the coil wears out. A pack-a-day-equivalent vaper will burn through coils far quicker than someone who has a few puffs in the evening.

2. The E-Liquid You Use

Sweetened e-liquids are the number one coil killer. Sweeteners like sucralose don't fully vaporise — they caramelise on the coil and build up a dark, sticky residue that insulates the heating element and chokes flavour. Dessert, candy, and custard flavours will gunk a coil far faster than a clean fruit or menthol blend.

3. VG/PG Ratio

High-VG e-liquids are thicker and take longer to wick into the coil's cotton. Running thick liquid through a coil designed for thinner juice can cause dry spots and premature burning. Match your e-liquid to your device.

4. Power Settings

Running a coil above its recommended wattage range vaporises liquid faster than the wick can absorb it — leading to faster degradation and a shorter lifespan.

5. Priming (or Not Priming)

A coil that wasn't primed before first use almost always dies early. Skipping the priming step burns the cotton on the very first puff, permanently reducing the coil's life from day one.

The 6 Signs Your Coil Needs Replacing

  1. Burnt taste — The clearest sign. If you're getting a harsh, burnt flavour even on a full tank at the right wattage, the coil is done.
  2. Muted or weak flavour — A gradual loss of flavour intensity is gunk building up on the coil.
  3. Reduced vapour production — Noticeably less vapour than when the coil was new.
  4. Gurgling or spitting — Can indicate the coil is no longer wicking properly.
  5. Leaking — A worn coil may no longer seal correctly, causing e-liquid to leak.
  6. Dark discolouration — If you can see the cotton through the coil, dark brown or black staining means it's spent.

How to Make Your Coils Last Longer

  • Always prime a new coil — Add a few drops of e-liquid directly to the cotton and wait 5–10 minutes before vaping.
  • Don't chain vape — Give the wick time to re-saturate between puffs.
  • Keep your tank topped up — Never vape on a near-empty tank.
  • Use less sweet e-liquids — Or keep a dedicated device for dessert flavours.
  • Stay within the recommended wattage — Check the rating printed on the coil.
  • Store your device upright — Helps keep the cotton evenly saturated.
