Why Is My Vape Leaking?

Few things are more frustrating than reaching into your pocket and finding e-liquid all over your device. Leaking is one of the most common vaping issues — and almost always preventable once you understand what causes it. Here's the full rundown.

Cause 1 — Overfilling the Pod or Tank

The most common culprit. Filling right to the very top leaves no air gap, and many tanks rely on a small pocket of air to maintain the pressure balance that holds liquid in place. Overfill it and liquid is forced out through the airflow.

Fix: Leave a small air gap when filling — don't fill to the absolute brim. Avoid getting e-liquid down the central airflow tube, which leads straight out the bottom.

Cause 2 — A Worn or Old Coil

As coils age, the cotton degrades and can no longer hold and wick liquid effectively. Liquid then pools and escapes. A leak that appears suddenly after a couple of weeks of use is often just a tired coil.

Fix: Replace the coil or pod. If a fresh coil stops the leak, that was your answer.

Cause 3 — Loose or Cross-Threaded Components

If the tank sections aren't screwed together properly — or are cross-threaded — the seals won't engage and liquid escapes from the joins.

Fix: Disassemble and reassemble carefully, making sure each thread catches properly. Don't overtighten, which can damage the O-ring seals and make leaking worse.

Cause 4 — Damaged or Missing O-Rings / Seals

The small rubber rings inside your tank create the seals that keep liquid contained. If one is torn, perished, or has slipped out of place, leaks are inevitable.

Fix: Inspect the seals. Many tanks come with spare O-rings. If a seal is damaged, replace it. If your pod is sealed and the seal has failed, replace the pod.

Cause 5 — Vaping Technique

Short, sharp, hard pulls can pull liquid past the coil and into the airflow. Inhaling too forcefully on an MTL device is a frequent cause of leaks and gurgling.

Fix: Use slower, gentler, longer draws — especially on pod systems and MTL devices. Let the device do the work.

Cause 6 — Temperature and Pressure Changes

E-liquid expands and thins when warm and contracts when cold. Leaving a device in a hot car or going through air-pressure changes (like flying) can force liquid out. Thinner, warm liquid also wicks faster and can flood the coil.

Fix: Store your device upright at room temperature. On flights, empty the tank or keep it as full as possible to minimise the air gap, and carry it in a sealed bag.

Cause 7 — Storing the Device on Its Side

Leaving a vape lying horizontally allows liquid to seep around the coil and pool in the airflow channel over time.

Fix: Always store your device standing upright.

Quick Leak-Prevention Checklist

  • Leave a small air gap when filling
  • Keep e-liquid out of the central airflow tube
  • Replace worn coils and pods promptly
  • Reassemble components carefully — don't overtighten
  • Use slow, gentle draws
  • Store the device upright at room temperature
  • Empty or fill the tank before flying
