Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? 6 Causes and How to Fix Them

Why does my vape taste burnt — troubleshooting guide by Krem Vape Studio

That harsh, acrid hit that makes you cough and reach for water. Every vaper has experienced it. The good news: a burnt taste almost always has a specific, fixable cause. Here are the 6 most common — and how to resolve each one.

  1. Dry or unprimed coil. The most common cause, especially with new coils. When you install a fresh coil and vape immediately, the cotton wick hasn't had time to absorb e-liquid — you're vaporising dry cotton, which produces a burnt taste and can permanently damage the coil.
Fix: Prime your coil before use. Put 3–5 drops of e-liquid directly onto the exposed cotton intake holes. Fill the tank, assemble the device, and wait 5–10 minutes before your first puff. Start with 2–3 short, gentle draws before vaping normally.
  2. Low e-liquid level. If e-liquid drops below the coil's intake holes, the cotton is no longer submerged. Vaping on a nearly empty tank is one of the fastest ways to burn a coil — even a relatively new one.
Fix: Keep your tank or pod at least 25% full. If you notice a slightly different taste before it turns fully burnt, that's your warning — refill immediately. Many vapers refill at the halfway mark to avoid this entirely.
  3. Wattage too high. Every coil has a recommended wattage range, usually printed on the side. Vaping above that range vaporises liquid faster than the wick can re-absorb it — the cotton dries mid-puff and burns.
Fix: Check the wattage rating on your coil and stay within that range. If you want warmer vapour, choose a coil rated for higher wattage rather than pushing a lower-rated coil beyond its limits.
  4. Chain vaping. Taking puff after puff without a break doesn't give the wick time to re-saturate. High-sweetness e-liquids make this worse — sugars caramelise on the coil faster, restricting absorption over time.
Fix: Leave 20–30 seconds between puffs. If you find yourself chain-vaping constantly, reassess your nicotine strength — you may need a higher concentration to feel satisfied with fewer puffs.
  5. Sweetened e-liquid gunking the coil. Dessert flavours, candies, and custards contain sucralose or other sweeteners that don't fully vaporise. They leave a dark, sticky residue on the coil cotton and heating element over time, insulating the coil, reducing flavour, and eventually causing burning.
Fix: There's no way to reverse coil gunking — the affected coil needs replacing. To slow it down: rotate in lower-sweetness flavours, clean your tank regularly, or keep a dedicated device for sweet liquids so your main setup stays cleaner.
  6. The coil is worn out. Coils don't last forever. Depending on vaping frequency and e-liquid sweetness, a coil typically lasts 1–4 weeks. Once the cotton is saturated with residue or physically degraded, nothing will restore it.
Fix: Replace the coil. Signs you're overdue: persistent burnt taste even at correct wattage on a full tank, significantly reduced vapour, or dark discolouration visible through the coil intake holes.

Quick diagnosis checklist

  • New coil just installed → prime it and wait 5–10 min before vaping
  • Tank nearly empty → refill now, don't push it
  • Device set to high wattage → check coil rating and reduce
  • Vaping frequently without breaks → slow down; consider higher nicotine strength
  • Using sweet dessert e-liquids → replace coil, reduce sweetness in rotation
  • Coil in for 2+ weeks → just replace it, don't troubleshoot further

Frequently asked questions

Why does my brand new vape taste burnt?+
Almost certainly a dry coil. A new coil needs to be primed before use — add 3–5 drops of e-liquid directly to the cotton, fill the pod or tank, then wait 5–10 minutes before vaping. Vaping on an unprimed coil will burn the cotton and may permanently damage the coil, meaning you'll need to replace it before it's really been used.
My vape tasted fine and then suddenly started tasting burnt — why?+
Three likely causes: (1) your e-liquid level dropped below the coil intake holes — check and refill; (2) you've been chain-vaping and the wick hasn't had time to re-saturate; or (3) the coil has reached the end of its life. Check the e-liquid level first. If it's fine and the burnt taste continues, the coil needs replacing.
How often should I replace my coil?+
Typically every 1–4 weeks depending on how much you vape and what e-liquid you use. Sweet dessert liquids shorten coil life significantly — sometimes to under a week for heavy users. Signs it's time: burnt or significantly different taste, reduced vapour production, or dark discolouration visible on the cotton.
Can I fix a burnt coil?+
No. Once a coil is burnt, the cotton is damaged and no amount of cleaning, rinsing, or soaking restores it. A burnt coil needs to be replaced. Bring your device into any Krem branch and we'll match you with the right replacement coil for your device.
