The Cannabis Education & Law Guide

South Africa's cannabis landscape has shifted dramatically since the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act (Act 7 of 2024). At Krem, we believe an informed customer makes better choices — so here's your 2026 guide to cannabis law, CBD vs THC, edibles, and wellness use.

General information only, not legal or medical advice.

What's actually legal in South Africa? (2026)

Cannabis for Private Purposes Act — the key rules

  • Growing: Up to 4 flowering plants per adult (maximum 8 per household) in a private space
  • Home possession: Up to 600g of dried flower at home
  • On the go: Up to 100g of dried flower, including on domestic flights — but discretion is always advised
  • Public use: Still prohibited. Keep sessions private to stay on the right side of the law
  • Commercial sale: The commercial cannabis market is still developing under regulation; buy from compliant, established retailers

CBD vs THC — what's the difference?

THC

The psychoactive cannabinoid. Provides the "high", and is used for appetite stimulation, deep relaxation, and sleep. Found in our CBD Plus and Live Rosin ranges.

CBD

Non-psychoactive. Legal for retail sale within SAHPRA's exemption (max 20mg daily dose). Used for calm, focus, and everyday wellness without altering your mental state.

The Entourage Effect: When CBD is combined with terpenes and trace cannabinoids (Full Spectrum), they work synergistically for a more effective "whole-plant" experience than CBD alone.

Edibles — the 3 golden rules

Edibles are one of the fastest-growing categories at Krem but they require patience. Unlike vaping, which peaks within minutes, edibles can take 45–90 minutes to take effect.

  1. Start low. Aim for 5mg–10mg per serving if you're a beginner. Products from trusted brands like Zootly show clear milligram amounts per piece — if the packaging is vague, proceed with extra caution.
  2. Wait it out. Never double your dose because you don't feel anything yet. Edibles often peak around the 2-hour mark — patience is the most important skill with this format.
  3. Check the dosing. Reputable brands label each piece clearly. Vague or unlabelled dosing is a red flag — stick to brands that are transparent about what's in each serving.

Vaping cannabis extracts — the right way

When using Zootly or similar extracts with a 510-thread battery:

  • Use ceramic coils — essential for preserving the flavour of organic terpenes. Metal coils can burn the extract unevenly.
  • Keep wattage low — these extracts are for 510-thread batteries, not cloud-chasing mods. Lower heat means better flavour and a longer-lasting cartridge.

Frequently asked questions

Is cannabis legal in South Africa in 2026?+
Private possession and growing are legal under the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act (Act 7 of 2024) — up to 600g at home, 100g in transit, and up to 4 plants per adult. Commercial sale and public use remain restricted. CBD within SAHPRA's exemption limits is fully legal for retail sale.
What is the difference between CBD and THC?+
THC is psychoactive — it produces the "high" associated with cannabis and is used for appetite, relaxation, and sleep. CBD is non-psychoactive and doesn't alter your mental state. CBD is legal for retail sale in SA within specific dose limits; THC products have different legal treatment.
What is the Entourage Effect?+
The Entourage Effect is the theory that cannabis compounds (CBD, THC, terpenes, minor cannabinoids) work better together than any single compound in isolation. Full spectrum products preserve all these compounds — that's why many users prefer full spectrum CBD over isolate.
How long do edibles take to kick in?+
Typically 45–90 minutes to feel effects, with a peak around the 2-hour mark. This is much slower than vaping because the compounds are absorbed through digestion. Never redose before the 2-hour mark — the most common edibles mistake is taking more because you don't feel anything yet.
